India Says US Trade Deal Is 'Only Matter Of Time' As Tariffs Reshape Bilateral Trade Negotiations

India and the United States are locked in a high-stakes negotiation to finalize the opening tranche of the Bilateral Trade Agreement by year-end. Commerce secretary Rajesh Agarwal said discussions were progressing rapidly but warned that last-minute hurdles could still shift timelines. The US has imposed steep tariffs on Indian imports since August, part of a broader policy shift under President Donald Trump, who has also urged India to curb Russian oil purchases. To keep the process on track, both countries are advancing two negotiations: the long-term BTA and a short-term Framework Trade Deal to neutralize immediate tariff pressures. Agarwal emphasized that most issues have been ironed out and any remaining gaps can be resolved politically. Despite a record trade deficit in October due to gold imports and lower US-bound exports, India says the deficit remains manageable. The goal: boost bilateral trade from $191 billion to $500 billion by 2030.
