Putin’s best missiles were destroyed in occupied Crimea before Russia could fire them. Ukraine’s defense intelligence, HUR, said it tracked a Bastion-M convoy moving into firing positions on March 24, then destroyed 1 launcher, destroyed 2 Zircon missiles, damaged another launcher, and killed or wounded 7 Russian servicemen. That makes this different from another missile intercepted in the air. Russia lost part of its strike system on the ground before launch.

Russia answered the same day with a massive barrage. The Associated Press reported nearly 400 drones, 23 cruise missiles, and 7 ballistic missiles launched at Ukraine. Ten locations were hit. Six people were killed and at least 46 were wounded. Russia could still hit Ukrainian cities, but it could not protect one of its own top missile systems in Crimea. That is a serious blow to the credibility of Russia’s long-range strike capability.

The damage goes beyond Crimea. Systema found that Kremlin videos shown on March 2 and March 3 as current had actually been recorded earlier. In Moscow, mobile internet returned only after 19 days, while Telegram disruptions continued for many users after an FSB-ordered shutdown. Kremlin-linked figures were also discussing an AI election tool for the 2026 State Duma campaign. Russia still has missiles. What is weakening is the command, protection, and political control behind those strikes.
