The United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire barely an hour before US President Donald Trump's Wednesday (Apr 8) deadline to obliterate the country was set to expire, with Tehran to temporarily reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz. Given stark differences on both sides’ terms to end the war, international relations professor Kian Tajbakhsh says he is sceptical a lasting agreement can be reached. The New York University academic tells CNA’s Asia Now he expects both sides to use the pause to regroup and replenish stockpiles, and warns that hostilities are likely to resume.
