Related: About this forumSince my SSDI case is more than two years old, my attorney told me I need to find a Medicare plan
My question is,
Are there any legitimate medigap policies for poor people? Or am I forced to choose Medicare advantage?
My attorney thinks my medicare will start in August or September. I have Medicaid now.

When I signed up for Medigap, I was quoted several hundred per month for the highest level plan.
Council on Aging folks found me the identical policy for $135/month!
One thing to know is that with gap policies, all policies in each category must offer identical benefits for that category.
I got mine through the Farm Bureau because it was hundreds cheaper for identical coverage. The premium goes up about $10 every year on or just before my birthday and I have to buy an annual membership to the Farm Bureau for $36, but it's still an absoloute bargain!
I hope this is helpful!
Congrats again, John!

(180,435 posts)This person is a consultant and has helped several of my law partners. I have a Schedule G supplement and a prescription drug policy. I am paying one-third what I was paying under my firm policy (partners pay all of their medical insurance coverage). My Schedule G policy is with Blue Cross. It has gone up since I first went on Medicare but is still better that coverage under my firm policy.
I would not do a medicare advantage. I believe these plans are scams and the consultant agrees with me

(81,030 posts)Because for every month beyond age 65 you go without a drug plan, if/when you do eventually sign up for one, there is a 1% per month premium penalty FOR LIFE.
Good luck!

(81,030 posts)Not sure how that works under age 65, but the folks at your senior center and Council on Aging can help you, get you set up, and even set it up so the premium, if any, comes out of your monthly benefit.
They will put in each drug, because not all plans cover all drugs, and drugs are different prices / copays, etc. between the plans. A real cluster fuck, IMO.
Good luck!

(103,145 posts)They seem to be helpful with my medications, which I rarely need, it's always been free.
Not sure if you actually need anything else... I was told that I was better off without any additional coverage. Maybe that's because I am not in need of surgery or any major ongoing issues.

(103,145 posts)That is something I have little knowledge about. Whether it's fortunate or not, my health issues are not operable and there's not really any medication for them, just occasional PT and my own diligence in following my maintenance program. My co-pays can be a bit much, there were some programs I was able to sign up for that were focused on income and were free. The last of which is WellCare. That's all I know.
I do hope you find some help acquiring what you need. I always found help from the 'resource' person, also known as a navigator, who helped me find the programs and sign up for them. They were located at the community clinic that served as my provider.
Now that I have relocated I am waiting for my intake appointment with a potential provider so I am not sure what I need here.

(6,111 posts)I'm not sure how Medicare and supplementals work if you are not yet 65.
You can try doing some reading about it online.
And I think the suggestions about help from your local senior center seem like a good idea.
Good luck!

(103,145 posts)You might check to see if your state has a medicaid program for low income people. You may qualify for both Mediacre and Medicaid.

(104 posts)Won't your eligibility for Medicaid continue as a Secondary Insurer (covering the 20% and paying for Medicare Part D).
