U.S. Showers Iran With Bombs in Most Intense Strikes of the War, Pentagon Says

U.S. Showers Iran With Bombs in Most Intense Strikes of the War, Pentagon Says

Iranians cowered under the barrage as Pete Hegseth, the U.S. defense secretary, said the U.S. aimed to wipe out Iran’s capacity to obtain nuclear weapons “forever.”

A new billboard in Valiasr Square in Tehran on Tuesday shows the history of Iran’s three supreme leaders: Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, his successor Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and his son Mojtaba Khamenei, who has been chosen as the new supreme leader. Arash Khamooshi for The New York Times

Amid what the Pentagon said would be the fiercest bombardment of Iran since the start of the war, the Pentagon’s leaders said Tuesday that U.S. and Israeli forces were “winning decisively” but declined to set a timetable for the end of the conflict, saying it was for President Trump to decide. ... At a briefing for reporters on Tuesday morning, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the United States had struck more than 5,000 targets in 10 days, and said it would be “our most intense day of strikes.”

Later on Tuesday, U.S. Central Command said it had attacked 16 Iranian mine-laying vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, the key strait and the gateway for global oil shipping. ... A video accompanying the post show munitions hitting nine vessels, most of which were moored at the time of the attack. Whether any Iranian mines have been deployed in the water since the current war began on Feb. 28 is unclear.

In Lebanon, where officials and aid groups are warning of a growing humanitarian crisis as people are driven from their homes, Israeli strikes against Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group, have displaced nearly 700,000 people, the United Nations said, and the government said 570 have been killed.

A week and half after Israeli and American warplanes attacked Iran, the war in the Middle East has roiled markets from Asia to the United States, interrupted travel in one of the world’s busiest travel hubs and left uncertainty hanging over everything from retirement funds to the availability of fuel in many countries.
