Kenneth Branagh's "Belfast"

Kenneth Branagh's Belfast has just opened in theaters in the United States. It's a look at his native city as it was during his childhood in the late 1960s, and it's filmed in black-and-white and color.

I've opted to share a clip rather than the trailer, as this is a more intimate scene featuring Judi Dench, Belfast native Ciaran Hinds, and newcomer Jude Hill.

With any Branagh movie, I always make a game of looking for actors who have worked with him onstage, in previous film projects, or both, and you will find several in this production. I won't give away any names, though, and spoil the experience.

6. I don't think Branagh would consider it to have a slant.

I don't want to deal in spoilers, but this is not a movie that gets into the details of the Troubles. It's very much focused on a single family and a single neighborhood, and the tone is by no means that of, say, Omagh or Bloody Sunday.

If you're not sure it's for you, I would suggest looking interviews with Kenneth Branagh to hear what he has to say.
