the window shattered the time the door hit the doorjamb
then it suddenly stopped hanging moments then dropping
coursing in sharp shards across rough cold bare concrete
wedging in crevasses cracks and crannies forever danger
even after being cleaned time and time again with futility
sparkling diamond bright when the hot sunlight hits right
hidden in the dark damp night seeking of fragile soft flesh
a surprise piercing pain blood drips unfound yet ever felt
probing of fingers a pinching with tweezers feeling almost
one more try one more push one more squeeze to get out
scabs form over a slight lump crusted wrappings peel off
here is a deep twinge that appears every once in a while
a callous grows a protective shield over the precious gem
reminding the past knowing the now predicting the future
