They just wanted only democrats to object.

The only thing that went wrong from their perspective is that too many republicans got cold feet and didn't stick to blind allegiance to dear leader.

They probably figured just a few hundred would object, a few hundred they could overwhelm, arrest and "make examples" of.
They did not expect hundreds of thousands to object, call for the resignations/impeachment of those involved, people willing to fight back however they can.
