Trump makes fatal mistake as his support takes a nosedive - Another Day - Brian Tyler Cohen

BTC: Trump abandons the Second Amendment. Will his supporters stand by MAGA or their mags? This is just another day.

Some say Trump's greatest asset is his unpredictability. One day he's calling a reporter a pig to her face. The next he's asking a Democratic socialist to the prom. He always zigs when you think he's going to zag. And today was no exception because after days of the administration calling murdered Minneapolis protester Alex Pretti an assassin who violently resisted ICE agents over the weekend and claiming this.

(cut to video)
Kristi Noem: This individual who came with weapons and ammunition to stop a law enforcement operation of federal law enforcement officers committed an act of domestic terrorism.

BTC: Today Trump had this to say about Pretti's tragic death.

(cut to video)
Trump: Well, I'm looking at that whole situation. I love everybody. I love all of our people. I love his family. Uh, and it's a very sad situation.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Wow. For a second, Trump sounded almost human. Then I remembered the hand {image of Trump’s bruised hand shown}. Still, it's clear that Donald Trump is finally feeling the backlash against his administration's campaign to mischaracterize VA nurse Alex Pretti's death as justified when mounting evidence points to the opposite.

Sorry guys, but you can't ask people to not believe what they can see with their own eyes. Just like you can't ask people to believe that you're not a walking corpse when we can all literally see the flesh rotting off your bones.

Still, this morning, Trump genuinely seemed to be trying to lower the temperature on the increasingly terrifying and unsustainable clash between ICE officers and protesters in Minneapolis. And in the spirit of the season of love as we head toward February, even his betroth chimed in on his behalf.

(cut to video)
Melania Trump: We need to unify. I'm calling for unity. I know my husband, the president, had a a great call yesterday with the governor and the mayor and they're working together to make it peaceful and uh without riots. I'm against the violence. So if please if you pro protest, protest in peace.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Wow. Of all the jobs I expected AI to steal, I never thought First Lady would be at the top of the list. The technology clearly has a long way to go, but once they figure out how to make this Melania bot emote, AI really could change the world.

But while the measured tones from Melania and Trump were uncharacteristic, they weren't even the biggest shock that we got from the president today because he also had this to say about the gun that Alex Pretti was legally carrying while he was shot.

(cut to video on WH lawn)
Trump: You know, he can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns.

Reporter: What about the Second Amendment?

Trump: Listen, he can't walk in with guns. You can't do that. But uh it's it's a very unfortunate incident.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Uh I'm sorry. You can't have what now? Did I just hear what I think I heard?

(cut to video)
Trump: You can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Are you kidding me? I knew Trump was flailing but putting any kind of boundaries whatsoever around the Second Amendment. Republicans don't even do that when kindergarteners die. You know what you give in times like these? You give thoughts. You give prayers. You do not give concessions on the Second Amendment. Not if you want the Republican base to stick with you. Trump should have known this because just this weekend, one of his DOJ minions tried to make the same point. And it didn't go so well.

(cut to video)
Reporter: Federal prosecutor Bill Essayli posted on X saying, "If you approach law enforcement with a gun, there is a high likelihood they will be legally justified in shooting you. Don't do it."

The NRA responded after this post with a rare statement, saying, "This sentiment from the first assistant US attorney for the Central District of California is dangerous and wrong. Responsible public voices should be awaiting a full investigation, not making generalizations and demonizing law-abiding citizens."

(cut to studio)
BTC: And the NRA wasn't the only group to fire back, naturally. Today, the Gun Owners of America tweeted, "You don't lose one Constitutional right when you exercise another. The First and Second amendments are not mutually exclusive and GOA will defend both, with No compromise.

Of course not. Why would you need to compromise? That's what the gun is for. In fact, if you want to know how unanimous the MAGA rejection of Trump's statement was, even Kyle Rittenhouse, the kid Trump called a nice young man after he shot and killed two unarmed men at a Black Lives Matter protest, pictured here grinning ear to ear like Trump's about to buy him his first prostitute, tweeted in response to the Trump administration's criticism of Alex Pretti's concealed weapon. “Carry everywhere. It is your right.” #ShallNotBeIinfringed. Take it from me, Kyle Rittenhouse, the guy who dodged a double murder charge.

But what's so enraging about Trump's statement today is that the man believes in nothing. Why shouldn't his supporters be pissed when he's been making promises to stand by the Second Amendment for almost a decade?

(cut to video at NRA convention)
Trump: You have an administration fighting to protect your Second Amendment. And we will protect your Second Amendment. Your Second Amendment rights are under siege, but they will never ever be under siege as long as I'm your president.

(cut to studio)
BTC: That's right. It's all under siege. Just like your access to health care, just like your ability to pay for groceries, but never never your Second Amendment rights. No. Sorry. Yeah. Yeah, those are fucked too.

Even when it comes to the very specific circumstances surrounding concealed carry laws, Trump has voiced unqualified support.

(cut to video in Oval Office)
Reporter: Would you be open to expanding the national concealed carry to apply to DC like it does in other states like Texas?

Trump: Well, they have it in some states and they feel strongly about it. I, you know, as you know, I'm in favor of it. Um, people have to protect the I'm a second amendment person, very simply. People have to be able to protect themselves.

(cut to studio)
BTC: People have to protect themselves. There are monsters roaming the streets who are capable of anything. Nobody knows that better than Trump.

(cut to video)
Trump: They say I have the most loyal people. Did you ever see that? Where I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose any voters. Okay, it's like incredible.

(cut to studio)
BTC: There it is. Trump doesn't think it matters if he contradicts himself because he thinks the MAGAverse supports him blindly. Not what he's promised them or what he says he believes. But naively, Trump failed to realize, or maybe forgot, or maybe the clot in his hand went to his brain, that the one non-starter for his supporters is the Second Amendment.

He's known the MAGAverse is all for taking up arms, and it didn't bother him when it advanced causes that he supported, right? Just think of January 6th.

(cut to video)
Reporter: The top aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows claims former President Donald Trump was told his supporters had weapons on January 6th, but that he said he didn't care.

(cut to video)
Reporter: [Cassidy] Hutchinson saying under oath that the president was angry security magnetometers were being used on his supporters and that Secret Services were turning away anyone with weapons.

Hutchinson: I was in the vicinity of a conversation where I overheard the president say something to the effect of, you know, I I don't effing care that they have weapons. They're not here to hurt me. Take the effing mags away.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Trump was fine with his supporters storming the Capitol with weapons so long as they were planning to use them for his benefit. Now that the right to bear arms has put his administration in hot water, though, he expects his supporters to back away.

A violent mob trusted a liar, and that liar trusted them right back and only now, for the first time in eight years, are both sides starting to realize, uh, maybe this was kind of a shitty idea. Maybe two red flags don't make a right. Is this really the end? Are Trump and the gun nuts really breaking up? I thought these guys would last forever. What do you even say at a time like this?

(cut to video)
Trump: Uh, it's a very sad situation.

(cut to studio)
BTC: You're right. It is.

where ICE would shoot one of its own and blame protestors. That would have given some MOJO to TSF.
