Let's talk about why Dems funded DHS for 2 weeks.... - Belle of the Ranch

Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about why Dems funded DHS for 2 weeks.

We're going to go over a question that came in, but a lot of people had similar questions, though maybe not as thorough. And it's about why Democrats decided they'd give DHS two weeks worth of funding when they were trying to work out a deal.

Belle, I've watched the channel for a while, but I really locked in during the one Big Beautiful Bill when every liberal YouTuber was freaking out about things in it and you were just like, "Don't worry, it'll get bird bathed." with this supreme level of confidence. Then you had to come back and explain what a bird bath is. I think you're doing that thing where you assume we know something we don't. All the lib YouTube channels are screaming that Dems caved by giving two weeks worth of funding and you blew past it like you were totally unbothered. Is there a civics lesson in some weird rule we don't know about? Or did you just expect Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?

Yeah, gotcha. Let's take SNAP, food stamps. That's Department of Agriculture. For a long time, ATF was under the Department of Treasury. The government is full of departments with agencies that don't seem to belong. The Department of Homeland Security is the exact opposite. It's a bunch of agencies under a department that doesn't make sense to begin with. It was born in the aftermath of September 11th, and it threw a bunch of agencies together that probably shouldn't be in the same department.

DHS is way more than ICE. Would you want the Democratic Party to defund FEMA? That's DHS. The political backlash if there was a disaster would be immense.

The Coast Guard. What if somebody drowned and Republicans plastered the picture everywhere?

Or what if there was a cyber attack CISA could have stopped? DHS has a thing called the Science and Technology Directorate. Trust me, you want most of that funded.

Google Plum Island and assume all of the conspiracy theories are false, even though there was a biological warfare program that was documented during the Cold War. Just assume all it does is animal disease. I personally want them to have every penny they need to account for every Petri dish as they wind down operations to move to Kansas.

Okay. So, why didn't Democrats make that clear? Because they really are bad at getting their message out. Okay. So, why didn't Democrats just go after ICE? In theory, they could. There's no rule stopping that, but they probably didn't have the votes needed to do it that way initially. Now that more pressure has been built and there's more awareness, they might be able to swing it.

I was unbothered because the political risk of blocking all funding and then something happening under the purview of something non-ICE related was incredibly high. It made sense politically. The Democratic Party has put out what I think are pretty simple and reasonable reforms and they're getting their message together. Their 10-point list is something I think most Americans will agree with. Republicans can either make the reforms or try to ignore the way Americans are feeling nine months before the midterms.

Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
