(120 posts)42. In C. S. Lewis's "Screwtape Proposes a Toast", the hypocrisy of many who call themselves religious is called out.
The demon Screwtape, in his address to Tempters College, notes how many of those who call themselves religious leaders are actually doing work in the service for Satan. As Screwtape says:
"All said and done, my friends, it will be an ill day for us if what most humans mean by 'Religion' ever vanishes from the Earth. It can still send us the truly delicious sins. Nowhere do we tempt so successfully as on the very steps of the altar."
