I think he tried to replicate the massacre of the Lidice villagers in retribution for the death of Heydrich.

But.... he got it wrong. The nazis rounded the women and children of Oradour-sur-Glane into the church and burned it, not Lidice where the men were shot and women and children sent to concentration camps.
