Yesterday

distanced themselves from us. We used to be considered the "essential democracy" in the world and in spite of our many faults, we often were the glue that held the free world together.

Now everyone feels under threat and vulnerable. The authoritarians in the world are probably on cloud nine - it's a dream come true for them.
