…has some issues displaying various symbols and characters, including those used in several foreign languages (particularly French, with which I am most familiar).

The problem seems to be that special characters will not display properly (or at all) in titles. Usually they can be made to work in the reply text, though one may need to use some code to do so. The proper markup code can usually be found with a little Googling.
