Ezekiel 23:20 is one of the most graphic verses in the Bible. It uses highly explicit sexual imagery to condemn Israel and Judah’s political and spiritual unfaithfulness, comparing their eager pursuit of foreign alliances and pagan idols to unbridled sexual lust.

The verse (e.g., in the New International Version) reads: "There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses."

Key Context & Meaning: The chapter is an extended allegory featuring two sisters: Oholah (representing Samaria/the Northern Kingdom of Israel) and Oholibah (representing Jerusalem/the Southern Kingdom of Judah).

Spiritual Prostitution: The "lovers" they lust after are the pagan nations like Assyria and Babylon. Historically, Israel sought military and political alliances with these powerful empires. Prophetically, this also meant adopting the detestable false gods and practices of those foreign cultures.

The Message: The underlying theme of Ezekiel 23 is God's judgment. Because the nation turned away from their covenant with God to rely on foreign powers and worship idols, the prophet Ezekiel delivered a message that these very same "lovers" would ultimately turn against them and destroy them.
