U.S. Ambassador to France and Monaco Charles Kushner on Tuesday reached out to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot seeking to resolve tension after missing a meeting with his counterpart, according to The Associated Press. Kushner, the father of President Trump s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, skipped a Monday meeting where he was summoned by the French government to address comments from the State Departments Counterterrorism Bureau regarding the death of 23-year-old Quentin Deranque.
Deranque, a French right-wing activist, was allegedly beaten on Feb. 12 amid fighting that erupted between far-left and far-right activists. He later died as a result of brain injuries. The State Departments Counterterrorism Bureau last week said violent radical leftism is on the rise and its role in Quentin Deranques death demonstrates the threat it poses to public safety, in a post on X.
The message was later shared by the U.S. Embassy in France, which raised questions for leaders in Paris, leading Barrot to summon Kushner to the Quai dOrsay. During Kushners Tuesday call with Barrot, he addressed questions about the U.S. remarks about Deranque and was warned against foreign interference, the French foreign ministers office said, per the AP.
Kushner took note, expressed his willingness not to interfere in our public debate, and recalled the friendship that binds France and the United States, the office added, noting the two agreed to meet in coming days. The U.S. Embassy in Paris also confirmed the meeting in a statement to The Hill.
