Whether its just her, or her parents pushing her to be highly competitive to this level of violence, is not healthy. I'm guessing she views her own horse as just a means to an end. She's not even an animal lover.

There's a national organization called, "Pony Club," for kids. It teaches them basic horsemanship. Its not competitive, although they may go to some little shows--more like learn everything about your horse in a non-threatening environment with your friends. It promotes healthy attitudes. This girl must have missed that.

Horses can recover from such grievous injuries as long as she didn't hit organs, or slice leg tendons. A kid that would do this will move on to violence against humans though. Whatever psychological therapy she gets in juvie jail, I hope her parents get the bejesus sued out of them. I don't ride Western, but I've read a good barrel racing horse can be worth many thousands of dollars. The damage to the other girls is incalculable.
