I know an awful lot of independent or conservative voters who agree with progressives about this and other issues (think needless war-making, Wall St. bailouts, Big Pharma & Medical exploitation, etc.)

If we can't figure out how to work together in areas where there's substantial agreement, we may as well throw in the towel.
