I'm more inclined to blame IVs though. I've had bruises all over both my hands and arms from needles/IVs.

After seeing the swollen ankles, it does look like he is being treated for congestive heart failure and being he vehemently denies ANY heart condition, that would be my first guess. The more he denies something, the more likely it is the truth.
