12. I can see a defense in the government investing in say a company like Intel

Because advanced semiconductor fabs are a national strategic asset. Being self reliant here makes sense, especially given geopolitical concerns over Taiwan.

But as useful as LLMs are in certain applications, I can’t see a justification in the government owning a stake, especially a majority stake. As you said, it’s not clear when/if ever these companies will be profitable. Not to mention, their valuations will make little sense, and they’ll be incredibly volatile. Does the government really want this liability on the books?

Of course, none of this matters because the bill proposed here isn’t serious. It’s meant to spark a conversation.
