Escalation will only cause Iran to dig their heels in deeper. He can either, A, give in to their demands and look weak, or B, continue the conflict, damaging the US and global economy just in time for the mid-terms. There is no choice C.

There are a bunch of good reasons why no US admin since Reagan has stupidly chosen to go there.
