Supporters rally for Shasta County election initiative as lawsuit threatens June ballot [View all]

REDDING, Calif. — Supporters of a Shasta County election initiative gathered on Court Street in front of the Shasta County Courthouse on Monday as a lawsuit threatens whether the measure will appear on the June ballot.

The initiative would require voter ID, mandate elections be held on a single day and require votes to be hand-counted, among other provisions.

The measure qualified for the June primary after supporters submitted more than 10,000 valid signatures.

But a person identified only as “Jane Doe” has filed a lawsuit arguing the initiative’s elements are illegal under state law. The lawsuit also raises concerns that if the measure passed, Shasta County taxpayers could face the cost of a legal fight.
