On the anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, John Sloan's searing March 1911 illustration for the New York Call, a Socialist newspaper, responding to the tragic event

Drawing of a triangle with rent, profit, and interest on each of the three sides. Within it, the burnt body of a woman; a skeleton to the left, and a capitalist figure to the right

it’s the anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, the site of which — it’s easy to forget — is an active classroom building

our Lilly Sabella went there to talk to professors and students about what it means to study on the same floors where the fire took place

Wednesday marks the 115th anniversary of the fire there that 146 workers perished in. Now, NYU students research fruit flies and ant brains on the building’s upper floors.

And for the sake of historical completeness here is Sloan's illustration as it appeared on the first page of the New York Call on March 27, 1911, two days after the Triangle Shirtwaist fire
