For these standards. It's the same reason that the Army doesn't allow facial hair and requires the same type of waiver - the hair and in some cases the shaving bumps, etc can prevent proper sealing of gas masks.

Is it a reason that justifies bring discharged? No, but there actually is a valid reason for the existing requirements.
