Including CA, NY, And NJ permit marriage between cousins. (IIRC, there are about 20, roughly half of them blue states.)

And there is no medical reason to prohibit it - the very minor increase in birth defects is lower than, for example, the rate of complications for older women giving birth.

It's not really a dumb country bumpkin thing.
