The Tomb Raider series used to be famous primarily because of the enormous breast size of the female protagonist, but for the most recent entry in the series the developer reduced her breast size to be much more realistic and chose to focus on her personality rather than her body. When a series that is as notorious as Tomb Raider for presenting unrealistic body types decides to change the character to make her less sexualized and more humanized that shows things are moving in the right direction.
It is important to note that while many gamers get pissed off when you point out the misogyny in games, they do not get pissed off when developers release games that present more realistic portrayals of women. I have never heard a single person say they would not buy a Bethesda game because of the lack of cleavage, I have only heard praise for Bethesda's equal treatment of men and women, I have never heard anyone complain about it. There are certainly many people who defend misogyny in games, but there are not many that demand it and I think more developers are starting to notice this. Sure there are Neanderthal gamers who will stand up for misogyny, but why cater to them when the game will still sell without the misogyny? There are more women gamers now than ever before and Bethesda games have a substantial female audience that probably are attracted to the games at least in part because they can see women who look like real women rather than giant breasted leather bound dominatrixes.
While change is slow I think Bethesda's success as well as the fact that the latest Tomb Raider game became the most popular in the series after they decided to focus on Lara Croft's character rather than her breasts are making more developers rethink their portrayal of women. While I don't think the problem of misogyny in the gaming world will ever go away, I do think that things will continue to get better.
