Captain Marvel is Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who got superpowers when she was caught in the explosion of an alien machine. Shes also the character credited with helping to bring an increasing number of female readers to comic books in recent years diversifying the mostly male readership of a medium thats had a history of often treating its female characters as sex objects or appendages to men.
And Kelly Sue DeConnick, who writes Captain Marvels comic-book adventures and whose work helped give her the prominence that led to the movie, couldnt be more delighted that the character has drawn in so many female fans.
The book doesnt apologize for taking a feminine perspective, DeConnick said. I think women have every right to feel like theyre the protagonists in their own stories.
DeConnick was completely caught off guard by Marvels announcement Tuesday that a Captain Marvel movie is planned for release in 2018, as part of Marvel Studios next slate of superhero films. ... I feel so proud of her, like Carol is this person who lives in my head, and look what you did, girl! said DeConnick, laughing. It feels like a friend just got a promotion.
