19. My Dad Never Carried One

He was a medical corps translator in Italy in the post-war occupation of Europe.
The infrastructure was all so damaged, the local residents didn't have hospitals, so the Army had to provide medical care. There weren't enough Italian doctors who were absolved of fascist crimes, so there were doctors & nurses who didn't understand Italian. My dad did, and he was a qualified medical.
He was stationed mostly in Naples, which was only a 4 hour train ride to catch the ferry to Sicily. So, he could take leave with family in Messina. Perfect situation for him.
He never carried anything but a sidearm. Only fired a rifle in basic training.
