(18,577 posts)I'm simplistic like that. I am leery of anyone who uses "war" as an excuse to misbehave.
Seems to me that allowing state actors to just unload on anybody they want anytime they want and call it "war" is a step back from the Enlightenment, which while not all it was cracked up to be still tried to lessen the amount of barbarism in the world, not increase it. That was kind of the whole point of Article 1 Section 8 of the US Constitution. International law uses "armed conflict" intentionally, so that countries can't weasel out of the law by saying "it's not a war." The US Constitution attempts to be more rigorous, but of course Congress has decided to violate it, consistently and continuously. But Congress is no more above the Constitution than is the Executive: their cravenness is not legitimization.
